Description
Handmade from reclaimed scaffold boards
This substantial solid-wood piece started life as scaffold boards and was originally made by me as a TV and media unit.
Rather than throwing it away when it was no longer needed for that purpose, I’ve brought it back out as another example of what good reclaimed materials can become.
At 173 cm wide, it is a versatile piece that could work as a TV or media unit, a long low side table, display table, hallway or conservatory bench, or simply useful additional storage and surface space.
Built without nails
One of the more unusual things about its construction is that I didn’t use any nails to build it.
The legs, central supports and lower shelves were made to locate into slots in the adjoining timber. The joints were then glued and the whole assembly clamped together while the glue cured.
It creates a simple, substantial construction while allowing the scaffold boards themselves to remain the main feature.
Two large storage shelves
Underneath the full-width top are two open shelf sections, providing plenty of accessible storage without making the unit feel enclosed.
They could be used for media equipment, books, baskets, shoes, logs, display pieces or whatever suits where the piece eventually ends up.
The photographs also show the unit in its original role as a TV stand, giving an idea of its scale and how the shelves can be used.
Natural scaffold-board character
The original scaffold boards retain their knots, grain, marks and variations rather than being made to look like completely new timber.
The wood has been protected with Danish oil, which brings out the natural colour and grain while giving the surface additional protection.
As you’d expect from reclaimed timber, there are marks and imperfections from both the original material and its previous life. They’re part of the character of the piece rather than something I’ve tried to disguise.

One piece, several possibilities
I originally made it as a TV unit, but that’s certainly not the only thing it could be used for.
It could make an unusual low bench, side or display table, media unit, large hallway unit or storage bench. Its simple construction means it can fit into quite a few different settings without dictating exactly how it has to be used.
Handmade by me from reclaimed scaffold boards and ready for its next use.
Your imagination is your only limitation.
