Beer Barrel Upcycled Table, Seat & Garden Stool

I like finding uses for things that would otherwise be thrown away, and this is a good example of exactly what The Revival Shed is about.

This started life as a used beer barrel. Rather than letting it go to waste, I’ve turned it into a practical piece of furniture that can be used in several different ways around the home, garden, workshop or entertaining space.

The barrel has been topped with a wooden surface covered with reclaimed rubber flooring material, giving it a hard-wearing top with an industrial look that suits the original barrel.

I’ve cut a large opening into the side of the barrel. This can be left as a feature in its own right, or used to hold candles or LED lighting, allowing the light to glow from inside the barrel and creating a cosy effect in the evening.

The cut metal edge has been finished with black protective edging trim, both tidying the opening and covering the exposed metal edge.

More than just a table

One of the things I like about this design is that it doesn’t have to have one specific purpose.

It could be used as a:

• Coffee or side table
• Garden or patio table
• Occasional seat or stool
• Plant or display stand
• Illuminated feature with candles or LED lights
• Handy step for reaching higher cupboards or shelves

Because these are made from genuine used barrels and reclaimed materials, marks, variations and signs of their previous life are part of the character of the finished piece rather than imperfections.

Rather than manufacturing something new to look industrial, I’ve used the real thing.

The barrel, wooden top and rubber surface have all been given another purpose, resulting in a useful piece of furniture with a history of its own.

Each one is made individually in my Hampshire workshop, so no two will be exactly the same.
